Srinagar, Jun 2 (UNI) About a dozen houses and other structures were damaged and power supply to many areas was disrupted due to strong winds, hailstorm and lightning in the Kashmir Valley, official sources said.

They said two cows and a calf died when lightning struck their cow shed at Syed Basti Sarfrow late last night.

About a dozen houses and other structures suffered damage due to strong winds in Harwan, Cheshmashahi, Nishat and other places, the sources said.

Several trees were uprooted in these areas, damaging electric wires.

The sources said power supply to several localities in the city, including Sonawar, Badshah Nagar, Natipora, Malroo and Banapora was disrupted after the transmission lines suffered damage.

A number of electric poles were uprooted in Malroo and Shalteang areas, they said, adding power supply to the affected areas was restored only after several hours.

Meanwhile, police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) rescued about 100 tourists, including some Members of Parliament from the Dal Lake after strong winds lashed it.

Sources said though there was no report of any damage to any house-boat or shikara, the tourists and MPs staying in house-boats were taken out from the Dal Lake as a precautionary measure.

Srinagar city and its adjoining areas were lashed by rains since morning. Rains have resulted in considerable drop in the temperature, forcing people to wear warm clothes.
