Mumbai, Jun 1 (UNI) Yusuf Pathan struck important blows at regular intervals to restrict Chennai Super Kings to 163 for five in the final of the DLF Indian Premier League (IPL) against Rajasthan Royals at the D Y Patil stadium here tonight.
Chennai Super Kings were helped by innings from Suresh Raina, Parthiv Patel and in the end by captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni to be able to reach a competitive score of 163 for five.
Rajasthan Royals who began the league as the underdogs now needed 164 runs at a little over eight runs per over to lift the inaugural IPL trophy.
Super Kings put into the bat were given a solid start by S Vidyut and Parthiv Patel as the duo put on 39 runs in 5.2 overs. However, it was Patel who started the scoring for Supper Kings with a flick to fine leg in the first over from Sohail Tanvir. He then in Watson's first over crashed the ball over mid-off for another boundary as the dimunitive opener continued his fine form with the bat.
Vidyut then got into the thick of things as he stepped away to give himself room and send Watson over the cover ropes for his first boundary. He then in the same over once again stepped down the track and upper cut the bowler over the third man for a huge six to get the innings rolling.
He, however, fell soon after as Warne brought on spinner Yusuf Pathan into the attack. On the second ball from Pathan, Vidyut tried to step down the track and clear the midwicket fielder but did not time it properly and ended up giving a catch to Ravindra Jadeja at deep midwicket. Vidyut made 16 from 14 balls with the help of a four and a six and the total was 39 for one in the sixth over.
Suresh Raina, who then joined Parthiv Patel then turned to decimate the attack with a flurry of fours and sixes. He lost Parthiv caught behind by Kamran Akmal of Yusuf Pathan for 38 of just 33 balls inclusive of five boundaries and then Albie Morkel who played a cameo of 16 runs in 13 balls with two huge sixes one each of Shane Warne and Yusuf Pathan before going for another big shot he skied the ball into the air for Akmal to take an easy catch running back of Pathan to leave Chennai on 95 for three.
