Chandigarh, May 31 (UNI) Punjab Governor and UT Administrator General (Retd) SF Rodrigues today inaugurated the Plastic Surgery Ward and Burn Unit at PGIMER, Chandigarh.
PGIMER Director Prof KK Talwar said that the addition of Burn Unit in the hospital accomplishes much needed requirement of such facility in the northern region.
"The department manages more than 600 burn patients in a year, many of these patients are in constant need of intensive care till the burnt areas of the body are resurfaced with skin grafts," said Department of Plastic Surgery Head Prof RK Sharma, adding that the provision of Burn Unit facility at PGIMER would go a long way in improving the care delivery to patients with life threatening burn injuries.
This unit has eight intensive care beds and ten step-down beds. It also includes two dressing rooms, patient shower area and a dedicated burn operating room.
"In addition, the newly renovated Plastic Surgery Ward is developing facilities for physical and social rehabilitation of patients with otherwise devastating burn injuries. This is essential to circumvent functional and psychological squealed of burn injuries," he said.
Mr Sharma said that the department was also focussing on vocational rehabilitation of these individuals so as to integrate them in mainstream as productive members of the society.
