Chennai, May 31 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Tamil Publishers Association has decided to celebrate the birthday of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on June three as 'World Tamil Book Day'.
The Association unanimously adopted a resolution to this effect, taking into consideration the immense contributions made by Mr Karunanidhi to the development of Tamil, Association Secretary K S Pugazhendhi said in a statement here today.
The Association had decided to honour the Dravidian patriarch for his relentless efforts for securing classical language status for Tamil and for announcing a number of welfare assistances for Tamil writers and publishers after coming to power in May 2006, he said.
Mr Karunanidhi had increased the number of Tamil books bought by general libraries from 600 to 1,000, given Rs one crore financial assistance to Tamil writers, doubled the prize money given to best Tamil writers from Rs 10,000 and taken steps for starting a world class library at a cost of Rs 100 crore.
The Chief Minister, a writer himself, had ordered for the establishment of a Book Park for the benefit of writers and publishers and constituted a welfare board for publishers, a first of its kind in the country, Mr Pugazhendhi said.
All the Tamil book publishing houses across the world, General and Central Libraries and the Tamil Development Department have agreed to celebrate Mr Karunanidhi's birthday as World Tamil Book Day by offering ten per cent discount on the sales of Tamil books, he said.
