Kolkata, May 31 (UNI) The Mission of Mercy Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC), in association with Medtronic, today launched an insulin pump installation centre, the first of its kind in the city for diabetic patients.

Speaking on the occasion, MMHRC CEO Sanjay Prasad said, ''The insulin pump is a big step towards helping diabetic patients live a healthy life. Every second the pancreas checks the blood sugar level in our body and delivers insulin. The insulin pump works very much in the same way.

''It gives diabetic patients the freedom to eat like healthy people and to exercise for any duration. Despite being outside the body, it delivers insulin continuously to the body to help combat diabetes,'' Mr Prasad said.

He said the insulin pump was available in three models costing Rs 0.98 lakh, Rs 1.85 lakh and Rs 3.45 lakh. Apart from this there would be a monthly recurring cost of Rs 4000 for accessories of infusion sets.

Mr Prasad also informed that the hospital would also launch its six multi-speciality clinic.

''About 60 to 75 per cent of new patients seen in speciality outpatient clinics in India are self-referred. Most are unaware of the problem source of their health problem and are ill equipped to choose the right specialist. Therefore, speciality clinic is a must for correct treatment of patients,'' Mr Prasad observed.
