Pune, May 30 (UNI) Star studded Pune district today retained the team title bagging 11 gold, seven silver and four bronze medals to claim the Marathon trophy in the two-day senior athletic meet, which concluded at the Baburao Sanas sports complex here.
Arch-rival Mumbai city had to be content with the runners-up berth in the championship, which served as the barometer to select the Maharashtra squad for the senior national and inter-state athletic championship to be held at Madurai from June 14 to 18.
Ace sprinter Ganesh Satpute won the 200 meters race, overcoming a strong field, by clocking a timing of 21.7 seconds. In the process, he completed a fruitful double in the meet. Satpute had yesterday won the 100 meters sprint in 10.7 seconds.
Shoaib Sayed of Mumbai city took the silver with a time of 21.9 seconds, while Deepak Basarkar of Pune bagged the bronze at 22.5 seconds.
On the other hand, Sushila Siddhi of Mumbai Suburban district, who had won the 100 meters in a time of 12.6 seconds, however, had to be content with silver in the 200 meters sprint event by clocking 26.80 seconds.
Both Satpute and Siddhi were declared as the Best athletes of the meet.
Bank of Maharashtra General Manager (Publicity) Madhukar Tapikar was the guest of honour at the final prize distribution function and gave away the prizes.
Pune District Amateur Athletic Association (PDAAA) president Bharat Desadla presided over the function, while Abhay Chhajed of Maharashtra Amateur Athletic Association (MAAA) was the chief guest.
PDAAA secretary general Pralhad Sawant introduced the guests, while PDAAA joint secretary Manisha Ghate proposed a vote of thanks.
