Hockey players need work on professional attitude and fitness

By Staff

Bhopal, May 30 (UNI) Newly-appointed selection committee chairman Aslam Sher Khan today said sportspersons need to pay special attention to their fitness besides adopting professional attitude in order to restore the old glory of hockey.

''Hockey is a sport that requires a lot of strength and agility along with right technique,'' Mr Khan told reporters here, adding that paying special attention to these two aspects was imperative to emerge victorious in contest against international level players.

He felt that sportspersons in the country especially in states such as Madhya Pradesh need to work towards their fitness.

Referring to steps taken to improve the conditions of the game in the country, Mr Khan said adequate financial support must be provided to players, coach and other people associated with the game.

Former MP Gufrane Azam said no good could happen to the sport by merely delivering lectures and organising matches. A solid base has to be prepared and common people would have to play active role.

He said hockey cannot be uplifted with the budget currently provided in schools and colleges. School, college, university, state and national level competitions were not being organised as earlier.
