Lucknow, May 29 : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today said the Uttar Pradesh Government is ready for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Arushi murder case.

Addressing a press conference here, Mayawati said that she had written to the Centre demanding a CBI probe into the murder.

She also blamed the Congress Government for politicising the Arushi case.

Mayawati said the police had certain evidence in connection with the case, but propriety did not allow her to divulge it.

The Chief Minister also reiterated that her government would only punish the guilty, not the innocent. And any police officer trying to protect anyone, too would be punished, she added.

On Wednesday, Talwars's lawyer filed contempt petition against NOIDA police alleging that the police had taken Talwar to an undisclosed location without informing his lawyers which was in violation of the court's order. The contempt petition was filed at the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate A. K. Singh, claiming that NOIDA police have not adhered to a direction that a lawyer should be present during the interrogation of Talwar. The judge has fixed the May 30 as the next date of hearing.

The judge had asked for a lawyer's presence during the interrogation of Talwar, who was remanded to three-day police custody on Wednesday, after defence lawyers expressed apprehension that the dentist could be tortured in custody.

Talwar was arrested on May 16 in connection with the murder of his teenaged daughter Arushi and domestic help Hemraj.
