Case against AP CM for electoral violation referred to court

Hyderabad, May 29 (UNI) The Hyderabad City police today referred to the city magistrate the case against Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy for the alleged violation of electoral code.

The Saifabad police had registered a case against Dr Reddy on a complaint filed by Chief Electoral Officer I V Subba Rao on the direction of the Election Commission of India for allegedly trying to influence the voters on the eve of the bypoll to 18 Assembly Constituencies and four Lok Sabha seats.

The Election Commission took cognisance of a complaint from the TDP that the Chief Minister had spelt out the Government's development plans at a news conference yesterday, which was broadcast live by five news channels, with an aim to influence the voters, which amounted to violation of Section 126 of the Representation of People's Act.

Accordingly, the CEO filed a complaint against the Chief Minister and the TV news channels, which telecast the press meet live, in Saifabad police station.

The matter was referred to the Nampalli second Additional Chief Metropolitan Court for taking appropriate legal action.
