Hisar, May 28 (UNI) A court here sent two persons, including a woman, into police custody till June 11 for ''sale'' of an Assamese woman as bride for Rs 55,000.
The accused 'groom' Baljeet Singh, and one of the seller Meena have been booked in a case registered under sections 366, 368, 376 and 120-B, for sale of Jonmani Hazarika of village Ghila Moda of Lakhimpura in Assam, Ishwar Singh, incharge of Multani Chowk police post told media persons today.
He claimed that the accused had accepted their crime and the police was further investigating as to how many other girls have been sold to 'bachelors' of Haryana so far.
Efforts were on to nab Meena's husband Omar Ali, who is absconding, he said.
According to the complaint of Jonmani, mother of a five-year-old daughter, she had come here for work and had stayed with Omar Ali and Meena, an acquaintance from her home-land, for about 15 days at local Surya Nagar.
In the name of providing her work as maid, she was actually sold to Baljeet Singh for Rs 50,000 without her knowledge. She is now pregnanat with the child of Baljeet Singh.
Due to the skewed male-female sex ratio in the state, there was an increase in number of eligible bachelors, who in desperation, were opting for purchasing 'wife' from other states through organised groups operating in the state for quite some time, he said.
