Shillong,May 28(UNI) The Meghalaya government is taking all possible steps to stop exortion by militant outfits in cement plants areas of the state.
Official sources today said that a meeting between the cement plants authorities and Jaintia Hills District authorities was held recently in which the plant owners sought necessary security arrangement to stop extortion by militants.
In the meeting, the cement plant owners informed the district authorities about the receipt of notices regarding payment of extortion to underground outfits.
Dimasa Halam Daogah(J) of North Cachar Hills of Assam, HNLC of Meghalaya and NLFT of Tripura had served combined notices to the cement plants in Jaintai Hills, seeking extortion money.
The District authorities assured the cement plant owners that the state government will take all possible steps to foil all attempts made by militants to extort money from the industries in the state.
Earlier, the DHD(J) had been collecting extortion on its own but now the other groups HNLC and NLFT have joined hands with it due to paucity of funds in their camps, which were mostly located in Bangladesh.
Furthermore, the HNLC had been compelled to tie up with the NLFT militants from 2005 onwards for extortion in Jaintia Hills due to paucity of both funds and manpower in the Bangladesh hideouts.
