Karur, May 26: More than 17,100 detonators were reportedly missing from a godown at Punnam Chatram village, near here, yesterday, police said.
They said godown owner and explosives dealer Rayanur P Murugesan, in his complaint, claimed that detonators had been stolen. He had found the doors of the godown broken open and immediately informed the Velayuthampalayam police station.
Police personnel along with sniffer dogs scanned the whole area.
The sniffer dogs ran a few hundred metres and squatted in a place nearby, from where some empty detonator boxes were recovered.
Police said of the 17,100 detonators, 700 were normal ones and the rest electric ones. There were two chambers in the godown and the door of one of the chambers had been broken open. Explosives and detonators in the other chamber remained untouched. Over 60,000 detonators were on the premises when the incident occurred.
Karur District Suprintendent of Police Shanmugavel said a special team had been formed to nab the culprits and a red alert sounded throughout the State, especially in the coastal belts.
