BSP workers detained
Rajkot, May 26 (UNI) Police detained around 80 activists of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) today for trying to lock out the collectorate office in order to stage their protest over renaming of Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) Zonal Office.
Earlier, the agitators held a rally, led by BSP leader Nalin Bhatt, as per their plan to stage the agitation and reached the collectorate office. Before they could lock the office, police overpowered and detained them.
Meanwhile, 'Dalit' community's agitation over renaming issue spread to Morbi, Tankara and Maliyamiyana talukas of the district as the 'Dalit' organisations staged 'Dharnas' over the issue, demanding to revoke the controversial renaming resolution.
They want the zonal office to be named after Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. RMC's resolution of naming the Central Zone Office building after the late BJP leader Chiman Shukala was 'anti-Dalit' and an insult to Dr Ambedkar, the agitators claimed.
The protests had taken a violent turn on Tuesday night last week when 'Dalit' members allegedly went on a rampage and burnt and damaged vehicles in different parts of the city. The police had to burst teargas shells to quell the violent mob.
