BJP candidate killed in poll violence, Congressman booked
Gurdaspur, May 26 (UNI) A BJP panchayat poll candidate today succumbed to his injuries sustained in a clash with rival Congress activists last night in village Dera Baba Basantpuri in Pathankot sub-division in this district.
The deceased, Jeetram, was severely injured when the supporters of the two parties clashed last night over the Panchayati polls to be held here today, police said.
He was rushed to Pathankot Civil hospital, where he died this afternoon.
Police have registered a case against Congress-backed candidate Manohar Lal and others.
Efforts are on to nab Manohar Lal, who is absconding, police sources said.
The panchayati polls in the village have been postponed due to the incident.
Meanwhile, in village Narowa Khurd in Kanuwan block, the polls were countermanded today after the Congress activists gheraoed a DSP-rank police officer alleging that he was favouring Akali Dal candidate.
