Amritsar, May 25: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-BJP today retained the Amritsar (South) assembly seat in Punjab with coalition nominee Inderbir Singh Bularia winning by a margin of over 22,233 votes.

Mr Bularia, who polled 43,495 votes, defeated his nearest rival Navdeep Goldie of the Congress, who got 21,262 votes.

SAD (Amritsar) nominee Bhai Ram Singh finished a poor third with 1,161 votes while Independent Sharanjit Singh could get only 363 votes.

The May 22 bypolls in the constituency were necessitated by the death of Inderbir Singh Bularia's father Raminder Singh Bularia, who had won this seat as a nominee of the SAD-BJP in the assembly election in February last year.
