Thane, May 25 (UNI) Newly-elected MP from Thane Lok Sabha constituency Shiv Sena candidate Anand Paranjpe today expressed happiness over his victory against his main rival NCP candidate Sanjeev Naik.
''It is a splendid ten per cent margin of votes which ensured victory for Shiv Sena,'' said Mr Paranjpe after the annoucement of by-poll results, which were declared at APMC market, Navi Mumbai this afternoon.
Shiv Sena's Anand Paranjpe secured 462,766 votes after the 13th and final round of counting while his nearest rival Sanjeev Naik of the NCP amassed 371,894 votes. Chandrasekhar Shukla of the Samajwadi Party came third, having polled 20,971 votes. This was the fifth consecutive win for BJP-Shiv Sena alliance.
While Mr Paranjpe secured 52 per cent of votes, his only rival Mr Naik got 42 per cent of votes and Mr Shukla bagged only 2.35 per cent of votes.
In the Thane assembly segment, Mr Paranjpe got 48,096 votes more than Mr Naik, while in the Belapur segement, it was other way round, where NCP bagged 10,884 votes more than Mr Paranjpe.
In the Ulhasnagar assembly segment, Mr Paranjpe won by a margin of just 1,137 votes over Mr Naik, while in the Ambernath segment, he secured 24,887 votes more than Mr Naik.
In Kalyan assembly constituency, Mr Paranjpe beat Mr Naik with a margin of 38,126 votes, while in Murbad, it was other way round, where Mr Naik polled 9,352 votes more than Mr Paranjpe.
Interestingly, NCP and its allies, who hold four out of the six assembly segments like Belapur, Amberanth, Murbad and Ulhasnagar, failed miserably.
The Thane and Kalyan segments are in the hands of Shiv Sena-BJP alliance.
The by-election had been necessitated due to the demise of Anand's father Prakash Paranjpe who had represented the constituency for four consecutive terms since 1996.
