Barasat, May 25 (UNI) With most village Panchayet Boards being formed by leading political party candidates, Independent candidates will form a Panchayet board leaving both ruling and Opposition party candidates aside in North 24 parganas.
Dharmpur-II was the only such village Panchayet in the state where as many as nine seats of the 13-member Panchayet were captured by the Independent candidates leaving two seats each to the CPI(M) and their arch rival Trinamool Congress in the Gaighata Block of North 24 parganas.
Though Opposition Trinamool Congress swept most of the Panchayets in Gaighata block, it was an exception where Independent candidates featured significantly.
Dissident Trinamool Congress activist Subhas Haldar, a local businessman, along with his eight followers sought elections as Independent candidates with an identical symbol 'chair' against the official Trinamool Congress candidates and the rulling CPI(M) and won by substantial votes following traingular contest.
