Opp GMC councillors to move court over mayor election
Guwahati, May 24 (UNI) Opposition councillors of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) today threatened to move court if the date for election for the posts of mayor and deputy mayors are not declared by Monday.
Addressing a press conference here, they set May 26 as the deadline for the GMC commissioner to announce the date for the elections, failing which the former would seek the court's intervention.
Originally slated for May 22, the elections were postponed after the Congress councillors resigned en-masse.
The Opposition councillors, numbering 29 in the 60-member GMC, alleged that the Congress government was conspiring to dissolve the GMC, but they would not allow it to happen against the provisions of their constitution.
They alleged that Guwahati Development Department Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sharma was behind the conspiracy as he wanted to siphon off the Rs 370 crore sanctioned for the city under the JNNURM.
