Manipur may issue arms to civilians

Imphal, May 24: Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and his Cabinet has discussed over the possibility of issuing arms to civilians to fight against insurgency in the state.

In a meeting last evening, Mr Singh said all the ministers, MPs, MLAs, District Council members, Zilla Parishad members, civil and police officers might be allotted guns for their protection.

DGP Y Joykumar had also submitted a proposal regarding the issue of weapons to the people of Heirok in Thoubal district and Chajing in Imphal West.

The Cabinet has also decided that the Special Police Officers would be recruited from the respective villages to protect their people and the government would provide arms and monthly remuneration of Rs 3000 each to each volunteer.

On the issue of the Advocate General's fees, official sources said the Cabinet had decided to provide monthly scholarship of Rs 1000 each to 300 students, 150 from Science stream, 100 Arts Stream and 50 from Commerce till graduation.
