Dehradun, May 24 : The fruit processing industry in Dehradun is generating fresh employment opportunities for locals due to the area's sub-tropical climate in the summers and an ideal winter season.
Fruit processing units have in fact, proved to be a boon for several people, particularly for the horticulture farmers in the region.
These farmers no longer have to worry about ways to market their produce, as fruit processing units have decided to step in and facilitate, giving them good value for their products.
The processing units are using the acquired fruits to make jams, juices and pickles.
Women in the region are also coming forward to take up jobs in these, which not only give them financial security but also empower them socially.
"We have become independent and no more dependent on others for money. We process different agricultural products in this factory like kino, ginger and mint," said Sunita Devi, a worker.
The food processing units are seeking to enhance technological development in the region by using modern machinery in manufacturing processes.
"Our objective is to manufacture natural food products and improve the lifestyle of the resident by generating employment. Our main job here is technology development in which we try to add value to the raw products," said Rakesh Gairola, Director, Ghanshyam Smriti Shiksha Evam Kalyan Sansthan. By Ashish Goel
