Agartala, May 23 (UNI) A senior police officer and in-charge of remote Khupilong outpost in south Tripura was today suspended for allegedly assaulting a labourer in his house last week when he refused to give him meat for free.

Reportedly, police arrested Officer In-Charge Subal Dey and subsequently suspended him from the service, while launching an investigation against him and two other police personnel, who were also accused of the crime.

Dey and his associates had allegedly demanded five kg of meat and some cash from one Ranjit Sarkar of the village on May 13. But when he refused to oblige, Mr Dey along with some other police men stormed into the house of one Hamid Mian, where Ranjit had gone that evening.

Ranjit had been severely beaten up by the police. He therefore had to shift Agartala Government Medical College and was undergoing treatment where doctors said he was out of danger.

Ranjit's family has filed a written complaint with the Killa Police Station and immediately the personnel were shifted from the area. Villagers and Tripura Human Rights Organisation had been exerting pressure on the government to take action against the accused.

This finally compelled the authority to suspend the accused from service.
