Jaipur, May 23 (UNI) The Army has been alerted in Rajasthan today following firing and violence in a Gujjar agitation, which left at least five people, including a policeman, killed and several others injured.
An irate mob of Gujjar demonstrators had blocked the railway tracks on busy Delhi-Mumbai route at Pillupura near Dumariya railway station in Bharatpur district this morning as part of their revived agitation to seek ST status for the community.
An official spokesman said the police opened fire when a bid to control the situation by use of teargas proved to be ineffective.
One Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC) personnel Bhanmal was also killed in the violence as the mob indulged in stone pelting and used batons too.
The mob has also resorted to arson and set afire at least one police jeep, he said.
The spokesman said the situation there was tense and the police and district administration officials were busy in controlling it.
The Army had also been alerted in view of the situation, the spokesman added.
