Dabra, May 22 : People of Dabra city in Madhya Pradesh are facing a severe water crisis despite municipal officials promising to address the problem.

According to residents of Dabra, most taps in the city receive water supply every alternate day and due to the low ground water level, hand pumps have become defunct.

Municipal officials say they are taking all necessary measures to ensure the smooth supply of potable water to the public.

"We have undertaken steps so that people get drinking water. For this purpose we have hired 27 tractors, 15 tankers, 3 trucks of 7000-10,00 litres capacity. With the help of these we are trying to supply water in areas where there is shortage," claimed Anil Kumar Dube, Chief Municipal Officer, Dabra.

The public, however, said the situation is grim.

"We are facing an acute shortage of water and the residents of this place are upset over this. People line up for the water tanker as early as 7 a.m. to only find that it arrives at 12 noon or 1.00 p.m. There is no pump or hand pump either from where we can fill upthe water," said Sanjay Srivastav.

People have to walk miles to fetch water as the river has dried up.

"People remain awake all night for the water tanker to arrive," said Bharti, a resident of Dabra.

This region has been facing acute water shortage for the past four years.
