UP road accidents claim 14 lives

Lucknow, May 21 (UNI) At least 14 people were killed and nine others injured in separate road accidents across Uttar Pradesh in the last 24 hours.

Ravi Kumar (15) drowned in river Ganga while bathing in Bhelpur area of Varanasi. His body was later fished out by the rescuers, police said.

Reports from Jaunpur confirms the death of two motorcycle-borne people during a road mishap in Madiyaon area, while a boy and his grand-mother were electrocuted in Mungrabadshahpur area of the district today.

Two people were run over by a speeding truck in Bhadoi.

At least five passengers, including three engineers from Gujarat and two Hindustan Aluminium Company (Hindalco) employees, were killed after a bus carrying them fell into a gorge in Pipri area of Sonebhadra last night, police said.

The accident occurred near Hathvani, where the bus, en route from Mirzapur to Renukoot, slipped into the gorge due to thunderstorm.

Altogether nine people, including a team of Birla Copper Unit Dahej, Gujarat, were travelling in the bus, police added.

The deceased includes three engineers from Gujarat -- Gopal Singh, Ritesh Majoomdar and Bharesh Kumar -- and two Hindalco workers Doodnath Yadav and Ajay.

Whereas, in Gorakhpur, a person was run over by a jeep in Baansgaon area. The deceased was identified as Sumer (35).

While, in Kanpur, Btech student Sanjay Yadav (22) was knocked down by a truck. His father sustained injuries in the accident.

In another accident, a man and his 11-yr-old daughter sustained injuries and had been admitted to hospital.
