Mumbai, May 21 (UNI) Police have finally arrested Abbas Mohamed Sameeza, an aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and absconding accused in the 1993 serial blasts case.
Sameeza, a resident of Jamnagar in Gujarat and one of 26 accused, was arrested by city police in suburban Andheri yesterday. He was on the run for last 15 years. He had offloaded a consignment of arms and ammunition meant for the blasts at Bharuch in Gujarat in January 1993. He was part of a team, led by extraded gangster Abu Salem, who is facing a separate trial in the blasts case.
Joint Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria told UNI Sameeza, believed to be close to underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, was involved in the blasts.
The accused was held from Andheri, where he was staying with his wife, he said, adding, police had also recovered a US-made revolver from him which they suspect is part of the same consignment he had offloaded.
Sameeza was booked under Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA) in Gujarat, and there are other cases registered against him under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Kalyanpur police station and the Saliya police station, he added.
Mumbai Police had informed the Gujrat Police about his arrest and will hand him over to them soon, police sources said.
