Killer brew toll mounts to 80 in Karnataka

Bangalore, May 20: The death toll in Saturday's hooch tragedy in Karnataka has risen to 81, with 25 more deaths reported from the city and Kolar district since last night. Police said that since last night, 25 more people have died in various hospitals in the city and from Bangarpet, Malur, Tetal and Narasapur in Kolar district. With this, the city had accounted for 50 deaths and Kolar district 31.

More than 100 people were undergoing treatment in both the places. Over 15 people had been arrested in connection with the incident. The killer brew is said to have been brought to the city from Narasapura in Hoskote taluk, about 40 km from here. The village, notorious for brewing illicit liquor, had left a trail of death in areas like D J Halli, Roshan Nagar, Dodda Bagalur and Lingarajapuram, along the Tannery road here.

Governor Rameshwar Thakur had announced a solatium of Rs 50,000 to the families of the victims and ordered immediate disbursement of Rs 10,000 to the affected last night. Following the incidents, Director General and Inspector General of Police R Sri Kumar ordered raids on illicit liquor dens across the State.
