Patiala, May 20 (UNI) The morale of five Indian pugilists---Jitender Kumar (51 kg), Akhil Kumar(54 kg), A L Lakra (57 kg), Vijender Kumar(75kg) and Dinesh (81 kg)---is very high and they are hoping to give off their best in Beijing Olympics.
Talking to UNI, chief national boxing coach G S Sandhu and Cuban expert B I Fernandes, sounded optimistic when they said ''Our boxers will hopefully win a medal or two in Beijing Olympics, since their morale is very high as never before.'' The boxers, currently training at the NIS here, will leave for Taipei likely on May 23 from New Delhi to compete in the AIBA President's Cup which kicks off on May 24. From Taipei, the boxers will leave for Germany for training-cum-competition from June 2 to 22. In Germany, they will compete in Chemai Cup at Halle.
Both Sandhu and Fernandes are accompanying the boxers to Taipei and Germany to keep them in high spirits till the Beijing Games.
The performance of the boxers in Taipei and Halle will speak about their status to compete in the forthcoming Olympics.
''Till date, no Indian boxer has won a medal in the Olympics.
Perhaps, Beijing Olympics may bring good luck to the Indian boxers.
This time, our boxers are well-prepared to win medals in the Olympics,'' Sandhu said.
