Ipoh, Malaysia, May 18 (UNI) It was a disappointing day for Indian fans as the eight-time Olympic gold medallists put up a strong fight before going down 1-2 to Argentina in the final of the 17th Azlan Shah hockey tournament here today.
India started in an agressive fashion and surged into the lead in the 10th minute as drag flicker Sandeep Singh powered home a penalty corner.
Argentina restored parity soon after through Mario Almada (14th min).
The south Americans mounted several incisive attacks but the Indian defence marshalled by Sandeep Singh and Diwakar Ram thwated their efforts.
The encounter went into extra-time as both teams failed to break the deadlock.
Almada (73rd min) fired the golden goal - his second of the match - as Argentina emerged champions.
