Shillong, may 17: The Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) is making huge investment to renovate the heritage hotel 'Pinewood' targeting the ''health conscious'' tourists, especially the foreign travellers.

Official sources said here today that the State Government has already sanctioned Rs 20 lakh for construction of a gymnasium in Pinewood, one of the oldest hotels of the North East.

The initiative to set up the gymnasium has been taken as foreign tourists visiting the hotel were insisting for it, the sources said.

After the completion of the gymnasium, the government hopes to attract more foreign and domestic tourists to the hotel, which will help boost the tourism sector in the state, they added.

''The renovation of the hotel is being carried out with the intention to preserve one of the most prestigious hotels not only in the North Eastern region but in the entire country,'' the officials said.
