CPI (M) to hold dharna in TN for abolishing untouchability
Chennai, May 17 (UNI) The Communist Party of India (Marxist) today announced a state-wide dharna on May 23, pressing for abolition of untouchability in Tamil Nadu.
CPI(M) Tamil Nadu Secretary N Varadarajan, in a statement here, said the party would launch the dharna pressing a five-point charter of demands for the formation of an egalitarian society.
He said the recent demolition of a wall between two communities at Uthapuram in Madurai District stressed the need for carrying out the fight against untouchability throughout the state.
He said places of worship in public localities should cater to all sections of the society and no particular section should be allowed to take control of them.
The government, after announcing a special package for raising the standard of living for the residents of Uthapuram Village, should ensure communal harmony, he said.
