Cong leaders booked for snatching nomination papers
Sangrur, May 16 (UNI) The police has booked Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) member, Aman Arora and district Youth Congress chief Rajinder Raju on allaged charges of snatching the nomination papers of candidates to the Gram Panchayat polls from the office of Shakti Kumar, the Returning Officer in Sunam this afternoon.
Police sources said that the trouble arose when the Returning Officer refused to accept the nomination papers of candidates forwared by Arora and Raju. The Returning Officer contended that as per rules of the State Election Commission no nomination would be accepted after 1500 hours.
The Returning Officer in his complaint to the police stated that the Congress leaders alongwith about 25-30 of their supporters came to his office at 1530 hours to submit the papers of candidates of villages in the vicinity of Sunam town. The two leaders and their supporters snatched the nomination papers that had been submitted to the Returning Officer within the stipulated time and fled.
The police on the complaint of the Returning Officer registered a case against Raju and Arora and about 25-30 others under sections 353, 186, 506 and 379 of the IPC. No arrests had been made so far.
Panchayat polls are to be held on May 26.
