Bill for 50 % property to a divorced woman

Gangtok, May 16 (UNI) With 40 per cent reservation in panchayat and municipality bodies, the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) government is set to extend more proportionate share to the women in terms of property and divorce compensations.

''We are drafting a Bill soon. This will force a man to give 50 per cent of his property to his wife in the event of a divorce,'' Chief Minister Pawan Chamling said here today.

He further stated that if a man brings a second wife, 50 per cent of his property would go to his first spouse.

''The Bill is being drafted by the Law department and will be presented and passed in the next Assembly session,'' he added.

The chief minister further said a notification would soon be issued to give equal property rights to the daughters in a family.

''This will give protection and respect to our girl children,'' he said.
