Phagwara, May 14 (UNI) A student was killed on the spot while 18 others were injured, when a private school bus overturned after falling into a road-side ditch near Vishawkarma Mandir on Phagwara-Banga Road this afternoon.
The deceased student was identified as Jatinder Singh (12) of Guru Harkrishan Senior Secondary School and resident of nearby village Pandhori. He reportedly fell off the bus as it skidded and was crushed beneath the vehicle which turned turtle.
He was taken to Gandhi hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
According to reports, the bus was on its way to drop students to their home, but the bus driver lost his control while saving a vehicle and the bus slid down the road-side ditch.
The bus driver Jasbir Singh, who sustained critical injuries, was admitted in Gandhi Hospital.
The injured students were taken to various private hospitals including Gandhi Hospital and GB Hospital and were discharged after being administered first aid.
The school MD Manmohan Singh told UNI that Jatinder was perhaps standing near the door of the bus and fell down as the accident occurred.
SDM Amarjit Pal said he would soon call a meeting of all School Heads to ensure proper transportation of the students and stressed that no violation of transport rules would be tolerated.
Police has registered a case.
