Jayasuriya blows away Super Kings; Mumbai Indians win by 9 wkts

By Staff

Mumbai, May 14 (UNI) Sanath Jayasuriya put up an awesome display of strokeplay as he totally overshadowed the local demi-god Sachin Tendulkar to help Mumbai Indians canter to a facile nine wicket victory with 6.1 overs to spare against Chennai Super Kings in the DLF Indian Premier League Twenty20 match at the Wankhede stadium here today.

Set a target of 157 for victory by the Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians riding on Sanath Jayasuriya's brilliant 48 ball unbeaten 114 reached the target making 158 for one to win by nine wickets with 6.1 overs to spare. Robin Uthappa was unbeaten on 16.

With this win Mumbai Indians continued their winnings spree totting up their fourth win in a row to now have eight points from eight games, while Chennai Super Kings slumped to their fourth defeat in their 10th match to remain on 12 points.

The sell out crowd that came to see Sachin Tendulkar provide the fireworks, saw the local hero get the innings underway with a boundary to the third man region of Manpreet Gony in the first over of the innings.

Jayasuriya then in the second over of the innings hit Albie Morkel over the slips to the third man region for a boundary and then nonchalantly flicked the bowler over the midwicket region for a six.

Then in Morkel's second over both Sachin and Jayasuriya helped them for a six each with identical upper cuts over third man.

After this Jayasuriya just went after the bowling leaving Sachin way behind in his tracks, as the Sri Lankan hit Manpreet Gony for three sixes in one over to bring up the Mumbai Indians 50 in just 4.4 overs.
