Moga, May 14 (UNI) Police has registered a case of murder against sub-inspector in-charge police station Dharamkot, and four local Akali leaders for allegedly battering an aged Congress supporter to death at his residence at Kokari Vehniwal yesterday, police said today.

The SI, Yadavinder Singh Bajwa and Harinder Singh, block samiti candidate (SAD) from Kokari Vehnival, his father Gurbachan Singh and three other Akali Dal activists including Harbhajan Singh and Kanwaljit of Bhinder Kalan have been booked under section 302, 323, 148, 149 IPC, Moga SSP Ashok Bath told reporters here.

However, no arrest had been made yet and further action would be taken after the post mortem report, he said adding that the case had also been registered against about half dozen unknown people, including policemen.

Ranvinder Singh, nephew of deceased Naib Singh, in his complaint had alleged that about one dozen policemen in uniform along with the Akali activists led by Harinder Singh, arrived at the residence of Naib Singh and battered the 60-year-old man with batons till he fell unconscious.

He was immediately taken to Moga hospital where he was declared dead.

Congress supporters led by four MLAs Joginderpal Singh Jain, Darshan Singh Brar, Ajit Singh Shant and Joginder Singh, had staged a dharna in front of Dharamkot police station for four hours yesterday demanding action against the guilty.

It was only after the registration of the case that they lifted the dharna and allowed the body to be taken to Moga civil hospital for post mortem.
