Congress to form self-defence force for north Indians: Nirupam
Mumbai, May 14 (UNI) Congress spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam today said the party had mooted an idea of creating a self-defence force for the safety of Hindi-speaking people living in the city.
Speaking to mediapersons at the party office here, Mr Nirupam said ''MPCC president Prabha Rau has approved the idea and it would work under the Congress banner.'' He said ''Although we believe in capability of the Mumbai Police in dealing with threats to the Hindi-speaking people, it is a fact that they cannot be everywhere. In every 'mohalla', we will create a group of 15 to 20 youngsters to guard and help threatened people in their area.'' He said MPCC president had suggested that the self-defence force would work towards maintaining social harmony in society and will have people from all language groups and not just Hindi-speaking one.
On Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray's speech at the Shivaji Park here on May 3, Mr Nirupam remarked that it was inflammatory in nature and action should be taken against him.
