Govt concerned at shortage of Army officers: Minister
Panchkula, May 13 (UNI) Concerned over the shortage of officers in the Army, the government has decided to increase the intake of commissioned officers and make the terms and conditions of the Short Service Commission (SSC) more attractive.
Also, the Defence Ministry is looking into the proposal of permament commission for women in certain streams in the armed forces, Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju told reporters during his visit to the Haryana Rajya Sainik Board (RSB) here.
Regarding the shortage of army officers, Dr Pallam Raju said there was a shortage of at least 12,000 officers of important categories, including captains and higher ranks.
He admitted that it was a matter of concern for the government but added that the situation was not alarming.
The government, he said, was making the best efforts to tackle the situation which had developed in the wake of better opportunities in the private sector. The Ministry was also aware of the fact that the defence forces was no longer the preferred choice among the youth for their vocation, he added.
