3 held for attempting to smuggle resin oil to Sri Lanka
Rameswaram, May 12 (UNI) A special team of Tamil Nadu police here today arrested three people, including a woman, for allegedly attempting to smuggle 20 cans of resin oil to Sri Lanka and seized two fishing trawlers.
Police sources said two fishermen Selvam and Selvaraj had attempted to smuggle the 20 cans allegedly to the LTTE, under the guise of fishing, in an outboard engine-fitted country boat on May five.
A Sri Lankan Naval vessel intercepted their boat near Neduntheevu Island. Fearing action, the duo threw the resil oil cans into the sea and jumped into the water. However, Selvam was caught by the Navy and taken to Sri Lanka on the charge of trespassing into Sri Lankan Territorial waters, while Selvaraj managed to escape.
Selvaraj told the police here that the Sri Lankan Navy had opened fire and arrested Selvam while fishing. Following this, the police formed a special team to probe the episode.
After an intensive probe, they found that Selvam and Selvaraj had made attempts to smuggle the resin oil for the LTTE.
The special team arrested Selvaraj and his associates Murugan and Parameswari, who procured the resin oil.
Further investigation was on to find out whether a big network was involved in the smuggling, the sources added.
