Election for Meghalaya Assembly Deputy Speaker to be held tomorrow
Shillong, May 11 (UNI) With the election for the post of the Meghalaya Assembly Deputy Speaker scheduled to be held here tomorrow, the ruling Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) exuded confidence to win the seat.
The NCP-led MPA government had nominated Mr Sanbor Shullai for the post while the Congress-led Opposition Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) nominated Mr Lahkmen Rymbai as its candidate for the Deputy Speaker's post, the election for which will be conducted through secret ballot.
MPA sources claimed that their candidate Mr Shullai would be elected as Deputy Speaker in the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly as the MPA had 32 members while the Opposition MUA had 28 legislators in the Assembly.
Both the alliances had separately issued whips to its members to vote in favour of their respective candidates.
The NCP, however, downplayed the Congress demand for unanimous election for its candidate, saying the party had no right to raise such a demand on the basis of Parliamentary convention since it had not adopted the same policy during the D D Lapang-led government in the state.
