500 rain-hit-people homeless in Andaman

Port Blair, May 10 (UNI) At least 500 people, affected by heavy rainfall in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, have been given shelter in Government Schools by the local administration.

Met department have recorded more than 231.2 mm of rainfall since yesterday morning, which has totally disrupted life in the city.

Due to heavy rainfall, flight operations at Port Blair International Airport have also been closed down, leaving more than 500 passengers stranded at Port Blair.

Dozens of areas, including Brookshabad, Bidnabad, Schoolline, in the Andaman Group of Islands were badly affected by the heavy rainfall.

The affected people here have been given shelter in community halls and government schools,'' Casper James, Tehsilder of Disaster Control in Andaman, told UNI today.

The District Administration is also providing food and necessary items to the rain-hit families.

Nearly 175 people of School Line and 300 people of Brookshabad Area of South Andaman have been given shelters in different schools and community halls of South Andaman.

Four houses in South Andaman villages have also been washed away due to heavy flooding, the Tehsilder added.

The Met department have recorded more than 700 mm of rainfall since January 2008.
