Kochi, May 9 (UNI) Union Commerce Secretary G K Pillai today urged the rubber farmers to be cautious of the cyclical trend of the rubber prices and be prepared to face any eventualities.
Speaking at the concluding session of the 'International Conference on Natural Rubber Extension and Development' here, he said ''though the price of the rubber was at an all-time high, the farmers should be wary of the price fluctuations in the commodities.'' He said the rubber sector should also address the issue of how many farmers it could hold and should be able to maintain and sustain a price, which was economically viable for all the stakeholders.
'' The farmers and people concerned should see that the danger of price instability in the rubber sector should be overcome through price stabilisation fund, social security fund or crop insurance scheme,'' he noted.
He said researchers should try to tackle the climate change issue and bring in more genetically modified crops for increased porductivity.
Earlier speaking to reporters, Mr Pillai said '' the exports of rice might be limited as we have a duty to the world community to put enough rice in the world market.'' He said already relaxation in rice exports was allowed as exports were made to Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar.
Touching on the prevailing high inflation, Mr Pillai said ''inflation was an interplay of lot of factors and these could not be predicted or foreseen.'' UNI MA VV NY US1945
