Lucknow, May 9 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh Congress unit today held a demonstration here to protest the ''lawlessness under the misrule of the Mayawati government'' in the state.
Congress activists, led by UP party unit president Dr Rita Bahuguna Joshi and legislature party leader Pramod Tiwari, marched from Shahid Smarak to Gandhi Pratima near GPO, raising anti-government slogans.
Police had to use mild force near the Novelty crossing, when the protestors tried to cross the barricades, sources said.
Later, the Congress district office bearers handed over a memorandum addressed to the Governor to the district authorities.
Announcing that the next phase of the agitation would be 'Jail Bharo' programme against the government, Ms Joshi said Ms Mayawati has miserably failed to control the price hike of essential commodities, following free rule of the hoarders.
She also said that atrocities on dalits and attacks on women had increased under the present regime, while corruption was rampant, affecting the developmental works.
The district authorities had permitted the Congress to hold the march this noon.
Similar demonstrations of the Congress were held in other district headquarters in the state against the Mayawati government.
