Tebma ready to build slipway for local fisherfolk
Udupi, May 8 (UNI) The management of Tebma Shipyards Ltd today said it was committed to construct an exclusive slipway free of cost for the use of fishing community in Malpe.
Addressing the press here last night, Mr M M Kamat, Director and Ashok Acharya, General Manager of the company said it emerged as the successful bidder for taking up ship building activities in Malpe in 1999.
The state government has agreed to hand over 10 acre of land for construction of the slipway at the earliest.
On May three, the fisherfolk protested before the shipbuilding site for the company allegedly not keeping its promise of building the slipway after it's shipbuilding activities affected them.
He said when the ship building activity begins, Karnataka will be on the ship building map of the country creating additional employment.
Tebma, established in 1984, has so for built over 100 vessels, catering to the needs of diverse clientele including Defence, leading ports, power plants and global shipping companies, he said.
It ownes shipbuilding facility near Chennai on the East Coast and Kochi on the West.
