Sri Lankan navy arrests Indian fisherman in mid-sea
Ramanathapuram, May 8 (UNI) An Indian fisherman was arrested by Sri Lankan navy in mid sea, while another fisherman managed to escape early today.
Official sources said the duo, Selvam (30) and Selvaraj (32), ventured into the sea for fishing in an out-board engine-fitted country- boat on May five last. While fishing, Lankan naval vessel intercepted their boat and opened fire in the air.
The duo jumped into the sea to save their lives. However, the Lankans caught hold of Selvam, while Selvaraj managed to reach Indian territorial waters and was rescued by another fishing trawler.
The State Government was urged to take steps for the release of Selvam, sources added.
