Mumbai, May 8 (UNI) The People's Health Organisation (PHO), a non-governmental organisation, has filed a writ petition in the Bombay High Court praying that the state government be directed to restore the number of medical postgraduate seats to the 2001 status and take concrete steps to improve medical education in the state.
The matter will come up for admission tomorrow before division bench comprising justices V M Kanade and S S Shinde.
PHO general secretary Dr I S Gilada has said in the petition that there has been consistent and irrational reduction in postgraduate seats since 2001 on the excuse of de-recognition by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
The petition says that while in other educational spheres like IT, IIT, IIMs, there has been a constant increment in seats, but medical postgraduate seats have declined and come down to a mere 411 in 2008 as against 1906 in 2001.
