Desecration of Thevar Statue triggers protest in TN
Madurai, May 8 (UNI) Tension gripped this district of Tamil Nadu over desecration of the statue of veteran freedom fighter Mukkulathor community Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar at Kondaiya Naickenpatti village today.
Police sources said unidentified men adorned the statue of Thevar with chappals. Enraged over this, villagers resorted to road blockade and staged a demonstration. 30 villagers were arrested for road-roko agitation.
Police pickets were posted in the village to prevent further trouble. Vehicular traffic, which was suspended for several hours, was resumed with police protection.
Violence had marred normal life in Southern districts of the State after the desecration of The statue at Goripalayam in the city recently.
A row of desecration of the statues of leaders here in the recent past was causing concern to the law enforcing authorities in the district.
