Guwahati, May 07 (UNI) Assam Opposition regional forces were uniting fast with the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) also joining hands with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today to form a large platform against the Congress.
Addressing a press conference, AGP president Brindabon Goswami introduced newly elected ASDC president Chomang Kro to the media in the AGP headoffice.
Both parties had a lengthy meeting and decided to join hands to form a broad arc of Opposition forces.
Already the AGP had set the ball rolling by getting the splinter forces of the party to come back to the party and the entire reunification process is expected to be over by the end of next month.
'' We hope by June a final understanding will be reached with the ASDC too, '' said Mr Brindabon Goswami.
However, the Congress today take a potshot at the growing alliance of the Opposition forces.
'' There is no doubt that all the regional forces are getting united because they are scared of the Congress' popularity. This is good for us, '' said State Health Minister Dr Himanta Bioswa Sharma.
He was confident that even a united force would not be able to take on Congress.
He said it was the AGP, which expelled founding president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, and now the same AGP was welcoming him back.
'' We the Congress also want him to be back in the AGP so that they can collectively take on us. The AGP is run by second rung of leadership. They are using Mr Mahanta for their own gain, '' he asserted.
However, Mr Goswami avoided any question on the unification.
Mr Goswami said talks with the ASDC were fruitful and they would like to carry it forward.
The AGP had long time association with the ASDC but in the past elections it fell apart and as a result both parties perished in the Lok Sabha as well as Assembly elections, he stated.
