Pune, May 6 (UNI) Top musclemen from all over Maharashtra will vie for honours in the first state-level ''Subash Shree'' best physique contest, to be held under the aegis of the Pune District Body Building Association (PDBBA), at the Giridhar Mangal Karyalaya Warje, near here, tomorrow.
The competition, started last year at the district level, was instituted to perpetuate the memory of late Subash Sadashiv Barate, a dedicated musclemen who passed away at the young age of 35 years.
Briefing sports scribes here today, PDBBA secretary Sharad Marne said top musclemen from Mumbai, Pune, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Marathawada, Sangli and Kolhapur will make the contest highly competitive.
''We expect about 125 musclemen to compete in seven weight groups and those coming from outstations will be provided free lodging and boarding plus one way fare,'' he said.
Being hosts, the Pune district will field two teams with a view to prepare and give maximum exposure to young and upcoming talents for the national body-building championship, to be held in Delhi, Mr Marne added.
Former deputy mayor of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Dilip Barate said the organising committee has decided to conduct the same event at state level so as to provide yet another platform to showcase their mettle.
''We will be hosting the contest at the state level every year henceforth,'' he added.
Organising secretary Devender Suryawanshi said the competition will offer a total prize money of Rs 1,36,000. Of that, the title winner will pocket a purse of Rs 21,000 plus the NCP trophy.
The competition, being held in seven weight groups, will also receive cash awards of Rs 5,000, Rs 4,000, Rs 3,000, Rs 2000 and Rs 1,000 respectively for the first five placings, he said.
While two additional cash awards of Rs 5,000 plus a trophy and certificates will be awarded to the 'Best Poser' and the 'Most improved body builder', he added.
