Puducherry, May 6 (UNI) The Puducherry Administration would take steps to secure 50 per cent quota for government in medical colleges run by Minorities in the Union Territory, Education Minister M O H F Shajahan told the Legislative Assembly today.

The government quota in all private engineering and medical colleges, except minority institutions, stood at 50 per cent, he said replying to a question.

Steps to secure 50 per cent of the seats for the government would be taken after a meeting to be held under the Chairmanship of Chief Minister N Rangasamy in a week, he said.

To another question, Mr Shajahan said the administration would also take steps to set up Sports Centres in all the four regions of the Union Territory, since Sports Councils could only be started by States.

The rules and regulations to set up the centres were sought from Tamil Nadu. The administration would also consider appointment of sportspersons as representatives of the centres, he added.

Mr Shajahan, replying to a question, said the administration would strive to set up an IIM here as the Centre had rejected the proposal to set up an IIT.

The Union Human Resource Development Minister had been approached for the proposal, he added.

To a question, Chief Minister N Rangasamy categorically said the administration would construct houses for all tsunami-affected fishermen after getting loan from HUDCO.

Every one was aware of the relief and rehabilitation measures taken up by the government immediately after the tsunami struck.

Boats were provided to the fishermen on recommendation of Legislators and fishermen panchayat presidents, he added.
