Name change referred to Pondy Institute: CM

Puducherry, May 6 (UNI) The Puducherry Administration would refer the issue of renaming Puducherry town to the Puducherry Institute of Linguistics and Culture, Chief Minister N Rangasamy told the Legislative Assembly today.

The town would be named as 'Puducherry' or 'Pondicherry' depending on the institute's recommendation.

Winding up the discussion on demand for grants for various departments, including Cooperation and PWD, the Chief Minister said the administration had sought a new location for the Puducherry Guest House in New Delhi and a letter written to the Delhi Chief Minister in this regard.

A new guest house would be constructed after obtaining another site. He also said the administration would take steps to purchase land for the construction of a guest house at Tirupati at a cost of Rs three crore.

The administration was committed to implement all the schemes announced in the last Budget and added the cooperative institutions such as the sugar and spinning mills would be expanded.

The Dearness Allowance of the weavers was being enhanced from 70 to 86 per cent and would be provided with retrospective effect benefiting 5,000 weavers.

He also said the birth centenary of Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Annadurai would be celebrated in a fitting manner.

After the Chief Minister's reply, the House passed the Appropriation Bill 2008 by voice vote.
